To Em’s credit, he at least has a sense of humor about D’Elia’s impression, even tweeting out the comedian’s recent parody of the rapper’s labored 10-minute “freestyle” session. The project is 45 minutes of Em railing against everyone who didn’t like his previous album, the equally unlistenable Revival (2017).
They’re certainly preferable to Kamikaze, his most recent anger-fueled album that he released in early fall 2018. Minute-long viral videos by D’Elia have been the most interesting thing about Eminem as an artist over the past few years. This is Marshall “Eminem” Mathers now, for all intents and purposes. Made up of equal parts unintelligible growling and spittle, a few phrases can be deciphered, such as, “You’re in a Ford Taurus getting an abortion and divorce at the same time as Harrison Ford!” Then there’s the coup de grace, “YOU’RE USING TOO MANY NAPKINS! BAPKINS! LAPKINS! YOU’RE USING CHAPSTICK AND NAPKINS WHILE I’M PAPKIN! FLAPPING AROUND LIKE A BAPKIN!” Comedian Chris D’Elia sits in his car and does the best Eminem impression ever captured on video. The video is slightly over a minute long.

Of course, nowhere is this more true than on "97 Bonnie and Clyde," a notorious track where he imagines killing his wife and then disposing of the body with his baby daughter in tow. There have been more violent songs in rap, but few more disturbing, and it's not because of what it describes, it's how he describes it - how the perfectly modulated phrasing enhances the horror and black humor of his words. Eminem's supreme gifts are an expansive vocabulary and vivid imagination, which he unleashes with wicked humor and unsparing anger in equal measure. Dre but also helmed in large doses by Marky and Jeff Bass, along with Marshall himself - mirrors his rhymes, with their spare, intricately layered arrangements enhancing his narratives, which are always at the forefront. As well they should be - there are few rappers as wildly gifted verbally as Eminem. The SSLP album was released on February 23, 1999. At a time when many rappers were stuck in the stultifying swamp of gangsta clichés, Eminem broke through the hardcore murk by abandoning the genre's familiar themes and flaunting a style with more verbal muscle and imagination than any of his contemporaries. It sold 283,000 copies in the first week of release but has totaled 18 million worldwide since it first hit the shelves.
